Hailing from Surrey, UK, 22-year-old singer-songwriter Miranda López recently released new single 'Lose Myself'. Whilst it is the first time we have reviewed anything outside of our comfort zone of the 'rock' spectrum, we are always extremely interested to hear upcoming artists of all genres.
The song starts with soft, soothing keys before López's effortless, soul infused vocals initiate the first verse. The high-quality production is immediately obvious, the low vocals sitting perfectly in a mix of layered synths as other instruments kick in, with the atmospheric verse making way for a falsetto pre-chorus laden with drums and the subtle, panned jangling of additional electronic sounds. The chorus arrives with a memorable hook delivering the song title - 'And I lose myself again'. Verse two returns to the airy, chilled vibe of verse one shortly before some dialled back electronic drums kick in to ensure the rhythm of the chorus isn't entirely lost. Chorus two takes us into a stripped-back bridge, allowing López to show off some of her vocal versatility. The epic final chorus fades out to end.
It's difficult to pigeon-hole the genre. As previously mentioned there is a definite soul-twang to the vocal delivery. The song itself certainly wouldn't be out of place in the top 40, but it also has a quaintness that means it sits quite happily outside of the mainstream too. It's a great, catchy, vibey pop song, which showcases both López's songwriting skill and vocal talent. It will be very interesting to see what she comes out with next, and whether she is able to carve a niche into a heavily saturated market. If we hear more songs of this quality, I certainly don't see why not.
